A two-car collision sent five to local hospitals for minor injuries and closed U.S. Highway 101 down to one lane near Cullaby Lake for about an hour Saturday afternoon.

At about 11:50 a.m., the driver of a Honda van traveling northbound pulled into a nearby weigh station to flip a U-turn. The driver of the van pulled out of the weigh station then collided with a Dodge Durango traveling northbound, causing the Durango to roll over, Oregon State Police officer David Rzewnicki said.

Names of those involved have yet to be released. The highway is now open.

While responding to the scene, officers also issued a citation to another driver, who crossed the safety cone barrier and almost hit responders while driving and taking photos of the crash, said Clatsop County Sherrif’s deputy Chance Moore said.

“Please use common sense and keep your eyes on the road,” Moore said. “We often get more rear-end accidents when these situations happen because people are distracted.”
