FOREST GROVE — The Seaside boys basketball team won the state 4A championship tonight, overpowering Valley Catholic with a dominant second-half performance.

The Gulls, who finished second last year, won 71-63 for their first state title.

Jackson Januik led all scorers with 29 points. He also had six rebounds and six assists.

Seaside held a narrow 27-25 lead at halftime. But the Gulls pulled away from the Valiants in the second half, building a seven-point lead after the third quarter and going up by 15 points in the fourth quarter before shutting down a late rally.

The Gulls finish the season 24-1, with their only blemish a loss at Valley Catholic.
