A semitruck struck and killed six elk on U.S. Highway 101 early this morning near Camp Rilea.

John Phillips, 53, of Long Beach, Washington, was traveling northbound at about 6 a.m. in a white Freightliner when he was unable to avoid a herd of elk on the highway. Phillips will not face any charges, Oregon State Police said.

The Oregon Department of Transportation salvaged the six elk that were killed. The Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office and Warrenton Police Department assisted at the scene.
