A boater was rescued from the Columbia River Thursday after his vessel capsized near Social Security Beach on Clatsop Spit.

Chris Kiepke and his friend Loyd Burleson were crabbing about 300 yards offshore from Social Security Beach when they saw Lloyd B. Stewart, 64, of Warrenton on a nearby vessel bailing out water before his boat capsized.

“He was about 100 yards from us,” Kiepke said. “We sped over there.”

Kiepke and Burleson got a rope around Stewart, who was wearing a life jacket, and pulled him in, later transferring him to the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol. Stewart’s boat washed ashore on Social Security Beach.

Despite fishing on the river for 30 years, Kiepke said this is the first time he’s ever rescued anyone. “We feel really good about it, and we were really happy we were able to get him in,” he said.
