A Hammond man has been charged with 25 sex crimes, including eight counts of first-degree rape.

Mark Paiz Jr, 61, was indicted in October for crimes allegedly committed against a woman from June through September. For those alleged crimes, he has been charged with eight counts of first-degree rape, eight counts of first-degree sodomy and eight counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration.

Earlier this week, he was indicted for first-degree sex abuse for allegedly sucking on a woman’s neck in 2016. The alleged victims in both cases had mental defects and, therefore, were unable to provide consent.

Paiz has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Paiz, who has trouble hearing and does not speak English, has appeared confused at court hearings. He underwent a mental health evaluation after an order from Judge Paula Brownhill in November. Bail has been set at $500,000 in the 24-count case, and a status check hearing has been scheduled for February.

Paiz was arraigned Thursday for the most recent sex abuse charge. While appearing via video from the Clatsop County Jail, he again was unable to fully participate.

“I’ve talked to him and he does not reply,” an interpreter sitting next to him said. “I’ve shouted at him.”

Bail has been set at $250,000 in that case.

Paiz has previously been convicted in Clatsop County of first-degree criminal trespass, fourth degree assault, menacing and three times for driving under the influence of intoxicants. If convicted on all charges, he faces a minimum of more than 200 years in prison.
