Athletes of the Week
Kelly Willyard, Northwest Christian U.
Seaside High graduate Kelly Willyard, a sophomore on the track team at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, was one of three Beacons to post team season bests in their events over the weekend of April 14-15.
Willyard ran a 1:01.15 in the event to take sixth place. Willyard booked a return trip to Southern Oregon later this season (May 12-13), as she hit the Cascade Conference qualifying standard in the 400 meters.
In the John Knight Twilight meet April 7, Willyard helped the NCU 1,600-meter relay team take second, and the 400-meter relay squad place third. As a freshman in 2016, Willyard competed in sprint events and relays for the Beacons, and set a school record (13.11) in the 100 meters at the Linfield Open.
Sam Hinton, Willamette U.
The graduate of Seaside High, now a sophomore at Willamette University, was selected as the Northwest Conference Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts during the Willamette Spring Thaw tournament, April 14-15 at the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course.
Hinton won the individual championship with a 36-hole score of 144. He shot a 2-under-par 70 on Day 1 for the tournament’s only below-par round of the weekend. He carded a 74 in the second round.
