The 2018 Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival Court is being formally presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Astoria High School Commons. Each princess, the chaperones and the crown bearer will be formally announced and will give a short speech. Miss Scandinavia 2017, Megan Schacher, will also give a brief speech. Refreshments follow the presentations. The public is welcome.
Senior Miss Finland is Kourtney Tischer of Knappa. She is the daughter of Liisa and Steve Tischer, and granddaughter of Phyllis and Bob Anderson and Shirley and Mark Tischer. She is very active in volleyball and basketball at school, is part of the Oregon High School Equestrian Team, is in the National Honor Society and is an honor roll student. Her mother was past Miss Finland, and she is wearing the same costume as her mother.
Senior Miss Norway is Kaitlyn Bakkensen. She is the daughter of Jim and Laura Bakkensen of Scappoose and granddaughter of Joe and Gwynn Bakkensen and Jim and Sue Price. An aunt was Miss Denmark, and a cousin was Miss Finland. She is the basketball team manager at her school, she plays golf, and is in several clubs, including National Honor Society.
Senior Miss Sweden is Madalyn Elizabeth Hellberg of Camas, Washington. Her parents are Jon and Melissa Hellberg, and her grandparents are Dick Hellberg, Larry and Dea Helligso, and the late Joanne Hellberg. She volunteers at a preschool three days a week, is part of her school’s Green Team for environmental sustainability, is taking child development classes and played high school soccer her freshman and sophomore years. She is the former 2008 Junior Miss Sweden.
Junior Miss Denmark is Arianna Stewart. She is the daughter of Ciprianna Stewart, and her grandparents are Debra and Eric Stewart.
Junior Miss Finland is Cheyenne Sutton, daughter of Josh and Laura Sutton. Her grandparents are Marc and Shellie O’Connor, Darrell and Bonnie Sutton and Tim Schlip. Her older sister was Junior Miss Finland last year.
Junior Miss Iceland is Holly Bjaranson. Her parents are Boomer (Ryan) and Suzanne Bjaranson, and her grandparents are Bob and Sonja Bjaranson of Hammond and Bob and Carolyn Anderson of Portland. Her aunt was Junior Miss Iceland in 1986, and her cousin was Junior Miss Iceland in 2016.
Junior Miss Norway is Sofia Nygaard. Her parents are Carolyn and John Nygaard, and her grandparents are Julie and John Nygaard. Her cousin was Junior Miss Norway in 2015, and her mother was also on the court. Another cousin was a junior princess in the 1990s.
Junior Miss Sweden is Marlie McCauley. She is the daughter of Ben McCauley and Deanna Posey, and granddaughter of Rod and Kristi McCauley, David and Debbie Treanor and Leon Posey.
Crown Bearer is Ty Cereghino. His parents are Mickey and Angie Cereghino, and his grandparents are Don and Bonnie Fisher and Bobby and Nancy Cereghino.
Senior Court Chaperone is Michelle DeVos. She is married to Jonathan DeVos, and her parents are Mike McCall and Kellie Selven Bakenen. Her daughter, Megan, was 2016 Miss Norway and Miss Scandinavia. She is employed by the Warrenton Hammond School District and is the supervisor of Warrenton Prep Preschool.
Junior Court Chaperone is Angie Cereghino. She is married to Mickey Cereghino. She is a past Junior and Senior Miss Sweden. She has been involved in the Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival since she was a child, has been the chairwoman for the Troll Run for two years, and is currently the chairwoman of the festival’s Scholarship Committee.
Megan Schacher, 17, a senior at Astoria High School, represents the Finnish Lodge and the Scandinavian Festival as the 2017 Miss Scandinavia. Her parents are Michael and Melissa Schacher. She plays soccer, is a swimmer, and is a member of almost a dozen clubs within her school and community, including the National Honors Society and Friday Music Club. She volunteers around the community, and has four jobs.
