In One Ear: Around the world
Last year, a Russian immigrant in his 60s with iffy sailing/navigational skills, Rimas Meleshyus (pictured), stopped in Astoria on his way to complete what would likely have been suicidal trip around the world via the Cape Horn, South America, in a 24-foot San Juan sailboat.
Fortunately for him, he got blown off course and wound up in Hawaii. Several months later, he sailed to Sausalito, Calif., and got there in one piece, still determined to continue his quest.
After having his boat refitted by friends, he’s back out on the sea he loves so much. You can track his progress by “friending” him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/rimas.meleshyus. After two weeks, he has already lost one sail and is in the path of a huge storm. Some fair winds and following seas are in order.
