Athletes of the Week
(For the week Feb. 6-11)
Girls
Makenzie Kaech, Ilwaco, Wash.
Kaech has been a key ingredient for the Lady Fishermen, 19-4 overall and currently 2-1 in the post-season.
Ilwaco scored a 57-43 win over Adna Saturday. The playoff win snapped a two-year losing streak to Adna at Districts.
And Kaech, the 5-foot-10 junior, played a key role, with 17 points (10 in the fourth quarter), eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Ilwaco advanced to the District semifinals and clinched a trip to Spokane for 2B Regionals and the state tournament.
On Feb. 8, Kaech scored 18 first-half points (and finished with 22) in a 69-21 win over Onalaska in the first round of Districts, also the 200th win of Ilwaco coach Ned Bittner’s coaching career.
Boys
Will Garvin, Seaside
The senior was busy at the District swim meet in Astoria Feb. 11, racking up points to help the Seaside boys finish second behind Newport.
Garvin had the lone victory for the Gulls, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 57.63 seconds, almost 2 seconds faster than his time in the preliminaries.
He also helped the Gulls qualify two relay teams for the state meet — the 200-yard medley (with Isaiah Collins, Brad Rzewnicki and Luke Liljenwall) and the 200-yard freestyle (with James Kennedy, Rzewnicki and Liljenwall).
Garvin will be seeded sixth in the butterfly at the state meet this weekend.
