GLADSTONE — The defending state champion Seaside Seagulls picked up right where they left off last year, with a 68-60 win at Gladstone to start the 2017-18 season Friday night, in nonleague boys basketball action.

It was a state tournament rematch on the Gladiators’ home floor, where Chase Januik poured in a game-high 31 points for Seaside, and teammate Ryan Hague added 19.

Seaside defeated Gladstone 46-43 in a quarterfinal game of last season’s state tournament in Forest Grove. The Gulls also opened the 2016-17 season with a 71-55 victory over the Gladiators.

Gladstone was still within one point (29-28) at halftime of Friday’s game, before the Gulls went on a 22-16 run in the third quarter.

The Gladiators also couldn’t keep up with Seaside at the free throw line, where the Gulls made 27-of-32 attempts. Jackson Simmons scored 25 points for Gladstone.
