Girls basketball: Astoria scores 57-23 decision over Knappa

KNAPPA — Two teams with plenty of connections met in the final girls’ game Saturday of the Knappa Tip-Off Classic, with Knappa hosting Astoria.

The Lady Fishermen — coached by former Logger coach Mike Jacobson — improved to 2-0 on the season, with a 57-23 win over Knappa.

Brooklynn Hankwitz tossed in 20 points. Freshman Halle Helmersen scored eight along with Hailey O’Brien, while former Logger McKailyn Rogers scored four points.

Astoria built a 30-17 lead through three quarters, then outscored the Loggers 27-6 in the fourth.

Madelynn Weaver led Knappa with nine points.

Astoria opened the tournament Friday with a 46-42 win over Oregon Episcopal.

Astoria’s Sam Hemsley led a trio of players in double figures with 15 points. Julia Norris added 13 points and Hankwitz scored 10 for Astoria, which led 23-21 at halftime.

Knappa lost a 49-30 decision Friday night to Toledo.
