SCAPPOOSE — Unlike games in most leagues, there are no “sure things” or nights off in Cowapa League boys basketball.

The Seaside Gulls discovered that Friday night at Scappoose, where the Indians (with a 1-4 league record) topped the No. 2-ranked Gulls 48-45 in Cowapa League action.

Still missing leading scorer Chase Januik and Beau Johnson from the lineup, Seaside led until the final minute, when Scappoose players Bradley Verbout and Chris Bendle combined to make three free throws in the final 10 seconds to help the Indians win. A last-second 3-pointer by the Gulls was off the mark.

It was the second straight loss for Seaside, the first back-to-back defeats for the Gulls since 2015-16.

Ryan Hague scored 18 points to lead Seaside. Payton Westerholm tossed in 16 points with nine rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Bendle scored 20 to lead the Indians.
