Eliza Bannister, Makenzie Kaech, Ilwaco
The biggest 2B school in Washington is also the big favorite to win the Class 2B state title, but the Ilwaco girls basketball team needed two game-winning shots in the final seconds to squeak out a pair of victories in last week’s district tournament. On Feb. 14 against one of the smallest 2B schools, Wahkiakum, Ilwaco senior Makenzie Kaech banked in a jump shot with six seconds left to beat the Mules, 45-44. Three days later, Ilwaco senior Eliza Bannister made a 3-pointer with 6.8 seconds remaining to beat Napavine, 49-48.
Luke Goozee, Knappa
Competing in last week’s OSAA state tournament at Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Goozee was the No. 3-seeded wrestler at 132 pounds in the Class 2A/1A portion of the meet. He opened with a 48-second pin over Lowell’s Kent McIntosh in the quarterfinals. Trailing 10-4 in points in a semifinal match vs. Culver’s Cooper Becker, Goozee gained the upper hand and scored a fall at the 3:45 mark to advance to the finals. In the championship match, No. 1 seed Kasey Erwin of Lowell scored a close 11-7 decision over Goozee, who took home the second-place medal.
