SEASIDE — Valley Catholic, Churchill, Baker and Seaside were the big winners Thursday at Broadway Field, on the first day of action in Seaside’s annual Wood Bat Tournament.

The eight-team tourney continues Friday and Saturday at Broadway Field, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

In Thursday’s final contest, Seaside broke open a close game and finished strong in an 11-6 victory over The Dalles.

The Gulls advance to the semifinals, where they will face Baker at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

“Great day of baseball,” said Seaside coach Dan McFadden. “And it was a real good win for us. They’re a team (The Dalles) that’s really good at putting the ball in play, and we played some great defense.”

The Gulls put the ball in play quite a bit themselves, while pitcher Payton Westerholm — who has spent the summer playing for the Lower Columbia AAA Legion team in Longview, Washington — made his first start of the summer for Seaside.

Westerholm threw a strong five-plus innings before being relieved by Brayden Johnson in the sixth.

Offensively, Johnson led the Gulls with three hits, including a three-run, inside-the-park home run.

Travis Fenton, Dylan Meyer and Westerholm added two hits apiece for the Gulls, who are tuning up for next weekend’s junior state baseball state tournament in Corvallis.
