ESTACADA — The Seaside and Warrenton wrestling teams took part in the 10-team Ranger Classic, held Saturday in Estacada.
La Grande racked up 254 points to win the team title, with Warrenton finishing seventh and Seaside ninth.
The Warriors entered six wrestlers into the mostly 4A, 5A and 6A tournament, with four wrestlers placing.
Warrenton sophomore Nic Pior was 4-1 to take third at 145 pounds for the Warriors’ highest finish.
At 106 pounds, freshman Tyler Barefoot took fourth, and Sam Irwin was 2-2, good enough for fourth at 220.
Warrenton senior Giovanni Martinez was 4-1 to earn fifth place at 160.
“Gio battled in every match and showed some guts,” said Warrenton coach Corey Conant. “He lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the No. 1 seed (Keith Oswald of La Grande) in the quarterfinals, and couldn’t earn third, so he took the next best thing. It was a great tournament for Gio,” who won his final match with a 4-1 decision over Leo Rios of Sandy.
“We love coming to this tournament for the varsity competition, but the shark tank, or JV tournament, is where we wrestle most of our matches,” Conant said. “(Juniors) Anna Schenbeck, Isabella Carr and Jade Freniere went 3-0 and won their four-girl brackets. Freshmen Josh Niehuser and Trevor Snider-Clark also went 3-0.”
He added, “We wrestled a ton of matches against some great competition. We are gearing up for our home girls tournament Friday and our boys’ tournament on Saturday (the annual Warrenton Invitational). It is the first time that we have hosted a girls tournament, so we are excited to get it going and make it a tradition.”
Seaside had two wrestlers place fifth — Andrew Gastelum at 126 and Aidan Tice at 152. Tice won by fall over Molalla’s Dylan Wynn in a consolation final.
Team scores: La Grande 254, Washougal 199, Estacada 175, Sandy 169, Molalla 100, La Center 64, Warrenton 51, Corbett 43, Seaside 16, Colton 10.
