March 11, 1958: Albany builder to erect 57 homes

The following article originally ran in the Thursday, March 11, 1958, edition of the Albany Democrat-Herald.

Plans for 57 homes in a new Albany subdivision that will cost three-quarters of a million dollars were revealed today by Lee R. Kennell, Albany contractor.

"We will start building as soon as the weather permits, which means real soon," Kennell said today at his home at 1315 Chestnut St.

The new subdivision, to be called Kenwood Homes, will be located near where South Waverly Drive joins No. 10 Grange Road. Kennell has erected his office at 2714 S. Waverly Drive. The 57 new homes will be located immediately adjacent to the office.

The homes will be built on 20 acres, 10 on either side of Waverly Drive.

"Price of the new homes will range from $12,000 to $16,000," Kennell said. All of them will be three-bedroom. With variations, they will run from ranch style to semi-rustic, with some being partial brick."

The houses will be located on lots of about 90- by 125-foot lots. Streets and avenues are laid out and the area has been all surveyed, Kennell said.

"We'll be ready to start building the first three homes in a short time. One of them has already been sold," he said.

Kennell said that he believed "as far as any single subdivision is concerned, this is the biggest since Lehigh Acres or Hollywood Acres."

The home sites are located all outside the city limits of eastern Albany.

Kennell has been a contractor for 20 years, four of them in Albany. He built many of the homes in Lehigh Acres and others throughout the city. He said that the new subdivision has been "in the figuring stages most of the winter."

The contractor said that he would submit the subdivision plan for final approval to the Albany Planning and Zoning Commission early in April.

He said that the new homes would be financed mainly through local offices. First of the new homes should be ready within three months' time, according to Kennell.

The western half of the subdivision is an oblong block of 10 acres roughly bordering Waverly Drive. The 10-acre block on the east side of Waverly Drive is also an oblong block, running east and west.

NOTE: Lee Kennell's office was located near the intersection of what is now Waverly Drive and 27th Avenue SE. The Kenwood Homes subdivision was constructed around that area, roughly from 25th to 27th avenues (I think).

"You have your choice of 5 different floor plans," ran a typical ad from the era. "Each plan has three bedrooms, one-half baths, fireplace, paneling, and built-in range and dishwasher. We guarantee it will be well worth your time to call us and make an appointment to see these quality homes."
