Ada Louise Simmons passed on to the Lord’s presence Aug. 15, 2017, one week prior to her 92nd birthday. Ada was born Aug. 22, 1925 in Kelso, Washington, the only daughter of Raymond E. Light, manager of finance for the Longview Daily News for 37 years, and Grace Pearl (White) Light.
As a young woman, Ada played piano at concerts, community events and local radio. She graduated from R.A. Long High School in Longview, and attended nursing school at the University of Portland.
She married Gerald Day Simmons, a commercial salmon troller, of Ilwaco, in 1949 and they shared a lifelong marriage until his death in 1999, one week after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Ada shared Gerald’s subsequent participation in lobbying for and protecting the West Coast salmon fisheries.
Ada greatly enjoyed her family, and always looked forward to family events and visits. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Doug Sheaffer of Chinook, Washington; grandchildren Gabe (Solvita) Sheaffer of Lake Tapps, Washington, Cicily Brenenstahl of Mt. Home, Idaho, and Eli Sheaffer of Ilwaco, Washington; great-grandchildren Kyler, Kaden, Dylan and Ethan; nieces and nephews; and extended family members Suzanne Shortman of Anchorage, Alaska, and Sandy Rountree of Longview, Washington.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at noon at the New Life Church, 405 First Ave. N. in Ilwaco.
Memorials may be made to the South Pacific County Humane Society in Ada’s memory.
