Colleen Ann Simonsen was born in Astoria, Oregon, to Albert and Pauline (West) Stanley. Mrs. Simonsen grew up on Clatsop Plains, where her parents owned and operated the West Lake Market until their passing.

Mrs. Simonsen graduated from Seaside High School in 1949.

On Aug. 26, 1949, she married Howard Simonsen in Warrenton (deceased in 2004). Mrs. Simonsen worked summers at Point Adams Packing Co. while Mr. Simonsen attended college. In 1951 they settled in Hammond, and they began their family.

From 1971 to 1977, Mrs. Simonsen was the postmaster for the Hammond Post Office. She was then promoted to postmaster in the Warrenton Post Office, where she worked to retirement in 1991. Mrs. Simonsen was actively involved in the U.S. Postal Service Organization. Her greatest accomplishment was chairing the Postmaster’s National Convention.

One of her many joys was being a member of the Astoria Clowns and playing the calliope. Mrs. Simonsen also enjoyed cooking, knitting and sewing. She would make clothes for her grandchildren and knit baby blankets and hats for the Columbia Memorial Hospital maternity ward. Mrs. Simonsen loved to clam dig and spend time with her family at their boat house on Woody Island.

She was a lifetime member of the Clatsop Plains Presbyterian Church, where she played the organ and piano for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Astoria Clowns, Clatsop County Historical Society, Columbia River Maritime Museum, Astoria Elks Lodge 180, and volunteered at the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce. She was also very involved with the Warrenton Senior Citizens until the time of her sickness.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Terry Ferguson of Hammond, Oregon; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kelly Simonsen of Hammond, Oregon; a brother, John Stanley and his wife, Barbara, of California; grandson Jonathon Brown and his wife, Laura, of Warrenton, Oregon; grandson Michael Simonsen and his wife, Lori, of Prineville, Oregon; granddaughter Mindy Little and her husband, Daniel, of Warrenton, Oregon; grandson Matthew Simonsen and his wife, Mandi, of Warrenton, Oregon; grandsons Mark Simonsen and Mitchell Simonsen of Hammond, Oregon; great grandchildren Joseph, Tyla, Austin, Dawson, Lexi and Parker Little, Riley and Tyler Simonsen, Trinity, Trevor and Zoey Simonsen Jaydn Waer and Jackson and Mya Simonsen; a godson, Michael Simonsen and his wife, Kelly, of Easton, Maryland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Simonsen; an infant son; and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Vicki Simonsen.

A public memorial service is being held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at 1 p.m., at Clatsop Plains Presbyterian Church, 33324 Patriot Way in Warrenton, Oregon.
