Raymond Tolson

Forest Grove

Jan. 13, 1926 — Sept. 13, 2017

Raymond Darrel Tolson was born in Anaheim, California, on Jan. 13, 1926. He passed from this life in Forest Grove, Oregon, on Sept. 13, 2017.

He spent his youth in various areas in California and Oregon. He joined the Navy in 1943. After his discharge, he moved back to Oregon. He met the love of his life in Mary Lou Sharp. They were married on June 5, 1949, and spent the next 68 years together. They were married in Forest Grove, and settled in Gaston for a number of years. In 1969, they moved the family to Astoria, Oregon, where they spent the next 39 years.

He loved to fish and hunt. He worked as longshoreman for many years. After retirement he volunteered for Loaves and Fishes and the local food bank. He was always there to help any friend or neighbor with any project. He loved to garden, and had a vegetable garden which fed the neighborhood. His pride and joy were his purple potatoes.

His family was the most important part of his life. He was the glue which kept them all in touch and connected. Being the youngest of 10, there was plenty of family to visit. He loved seeing every member of the family. He had a smile for everyone he ever met. Everyone was welcome in his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson Leroy and Emma Udora (Kay) Tolson; and his sisters and brothers, Hilda Jones, Laura Delano, Effie Twiggs, Rosella Wennerholm, Wayne Tolson, Wilma Miller, Vera Collins, Howard Tolson and Vivian Mullanix.

He is survived his loving wife, Mary Lou; and daughters Susan Tolson-Stoddard of Diamondville, Wyoming, and Bonnie Tolson of Seattle, Washington. He has five grandchildren, Heather, Amy, Jacob, David and Stephen; and six great-grandchildren.
