Noma Johnson

Astoria

March 16, 1924 — Nov. 19, 2017

Noma Ellen Johnson passed away in her home on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017 at the age of 93. Noma was born to Milo and Georgia (Cole) Carpenter on March 16, 1924 in Astoria, Oregon.

During her lifetime, Noma worked as a waitress at the canneries, then later on became a swim instructor at the Astoria YMCA and the Seaside Aquatic Center.

Noma’s first marriage to Velo Hutala produced a son, Richard Hutala. In 1964, Noma lost her son, Richard, who died in a motor vehicle accident while stationed in Germany during his military service in the Army. Noma went on to marry Carl Kenwisher and had two children, Vernon and Lorinda Kenwisher. Carl passed away in 1955.

In March 1989, Noma married Don Johnson, and the couple had the fortune of being able to share over 30 years together. During that time, Don and Noma were able to enjoy the benefits of mutual retirement until Don passed away in 2015.

Noma is survived by a half-sister, Gayle, and Phil Courts; her son, Vernon; daughter, Lorinda (Al) Noman; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service is scheduled 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, where she will be laid to rest with Don.

Funeral services are in the care of Hughes-Ransom Mortuaries of Astoria/Seaside. An online memorial tribute and guest book are at www.hughes-ransom.com and www.facebook.com/hughesransommortuary
