Sept. 25, 1934 — March 5, 2018
Raymond Neal “Okie” Chisum passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018, in Longview, Washington.
Ray was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to Vernie Carl Chisum and Mildred (Branson) Chisum. He lived in Oklahoma until 1969, when he and his family moved to Astoria, Oregon.
He served in the Navy for four years.
Ray was employed as a welder and was employed at the Crown Zellerbach Wauna Mill from September 1969 until a stroke forced his early retirement in 1994. He and his wife, Dee, made their home in Westport, Oregon, until moving to Astoria in 2015 to be closer to their daughter and family.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia Deanne (Dee) Chisum; a daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Charlie Opsahl of Astoria; his grandsons and their spouses, Christopher and Marie Opsahl of Eugene, and Ryan and Jamie Opsahl of Clackamas; and great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Charlie, Jack and Evelyn Opsahl. Also surviving are a brother, Carl Chisum of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lana and Larry Lannigan of Seaside; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Vernie and Mildred Chisum; his brothers, Robert and Donald Chisum; a sister, Joyce Chisum; and his son, Robert Chisum.
At Ray’s request, there will not be a funeral, but feel free to raise a glass — preferably a beer — in his honor. The family plans to scatter his ashes in the Columbia River and place a plaque on the Maritime Memorial wall next to his son’s name.
If you would like to send condolences to the family, please send them in care of Dee Chisum, 91986 Hagen Drive, Astoria, OR 97103.
