Shirley Richards

Vancouver, Washington

Feb. 8, 1935 — Aug. 4, 2018

Shirley Anne Hjorten Richards, known as “Miss Astoria” by her peers the past two years, has passed away Aug. 4, 2018, peacefully at home, at the age of 83. She was born to Inez Doyle and John Hjorten on Feb. 8, 1935, in Westport, Oregon, and raised in Astoria, Oregon.

She married Laverle “Rich” Richards on Nov. 18, 1955. They lived in Portland, Oregon, where they raised their three children, Randall Richards, Jan Richards Berndt and John Richards.

Shirley was a mother, grandmother and homemaker who loved her home, her garden, and all her roses. Raising their three children, she was very active with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Portsmouth Little League. She managed the concession wagon for many years, and was the first female league president.

She was an active member of Portsmouth Trinity, and later St. John Lutheran Church, as the Sunday school superintendent and youth group leader for many years, and loved all the little children that she watched grow into adults, and one day have children of their own. Shirley was the first female to assist with communion at St. John!

Miss Astoria had a passion for history, and spent 20 years at the Portland Urban Tour Group teaching others about Portland’s history. Her urban tour group says she was an awesome mentor, and will be greatly missed. Other favorite pastimes were bowling in a league with her friends and painting ceramics. She was also active in the League of Women Voters.

Shirley is survived by her three children, Randall Richards, Jan Richards Berndt and John Richards; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and many people in the community.

If anyone wishes to donate in her name, please send contributions to her beloved church, St. John Lutheran Church, 4227 N. Lombard St., Portland, OR 97203.
