Nancy Bird

West Linn

Nov. 23, 1933 — Aug. 13, 2018

On Aug. 13, 2018, Nancy A. Bird (formerly Nancy A. Ames) passed away peacefully at Meridian Park Medical Center in Tualatin, Oregon, after battling several health issues. She was surrounded by her children.

Nancy was born in Toledo, Oregon, on Nov. 23, 1933. She was the daughter of James Frederick Hensley and Ruth Elsie (Zion) Hensley. She grew up in Warrenton, Oregon, and attended school there for most of her education. After moving to Astoria, she entered her sophomore year at Astoria High School, and graduated in 1951.

Upon graduation, she was employed at Knutson Insurance in Astoria. After her marriage in 1956 to Francis A. Ames, she spent several years at home as a wife and mother. Returning to the workforce, she had a variety of jobs as a bookkeeper and secretary, one being bookkeeper for Romsos Sheet Metal of Astoria. Her most prominent occupation was as head secretary of Star of the Sea School in Astoria, where she worked for 26 years.

During those years she was also staff organist at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, organist and treasurer for Astoria Christian Church, and a hostess at The Ship Inn in Astoria. Upon retirement, she married Lee Bird, and moved to Parma, Idaho, where she resided until 2015. She then moved to Turner, Oregon, then Tualatin, Oregon, and finally to West Linn, Oregon. During her years in Idaho, she was an active member of the Payette Christian Church in Payette, Idaho, and Sunrise Christian Church in Ontario, Oregon.

Having spent most of her life in Astoria, she was a longtime member of Astoria Christian Church, where she served faithfully for most of her adult life. She served the Lord with her beautiful singing voice, playing the piano and organ, and was a high school youth leader and Sunday school teacher. She will be remembered for her love and knowledge of God’s word, her strong convictions, her warm smile and boisterous laugh, and sense of humor.

She is survived by her children, Michelle McLean and her spouse, Doug McLean, of Lake Oswego, Scott Ames, of Astoria, and Craig Ames, also of Astoria. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, Amanda (McLean) Edwards, Kelsey Ames, Andy Ames, Jason Ames, Daniel Ames, Stephanie Ames and Tyler Ames, along with three great-grandchildren, Lily Edwards, Jack Edwards and Naomi Ames.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Francis Ames and Lee Bird; brothers, Ken Hensley, Forrest Hensley, Paul Hensley and Bob Hensley; and sister, Fern Redding.

She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed.

A private interment will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, Oregon.

A memorial service will be held on Sept. 29, 2018, at 2 p.m., at Astoria Christian Church, 1151 Harrison Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Astoria Christian Church or a charity of your choice.
