The Knappa track program is under new leadership as Brittany Ferguson and Aaron Thornton take over as coaches for the 2012 season.
Ferguson will be the head coach, as the graduate of Canby High School, Western Oregon and Pacific University steps in for Erik Anderson.
The Loggers have a young, but “fairly talented” roster, said Thornton, who will serve as an assistant coach. “I don’t know if we’ll see amazing results this year, but in the next couple years for sure. I think they’ll do real well.”
It’s a lineup of mainly runners, mixed in with a few throwers, such as junior Arashi Pierre.
“Arashi needs to work on some techniques, but he has the strength and potential to be a good thrower,” Thornton said.
Another point-scorer will be senior Pat Morgan, who specializes in the jumping events.
Cari Knappa is the only other senior on the roster, which includes five freshmen and three sophomores.
“We have a real young, hard-working group of kids,” Thornton said. “We have a couple kids who should do well. Alisha Geisler is pretty fast, and might end up going to state as a freshman. She’s one to keep an eye on.”
The Knappa boys lost a big point-scorer to graduation from last season in Zoli Bokor, who placed second in the league championship 110-meter hurdles, and third in the 300-meter hurdles.
The team to beat in the Northwest League is Portland Christian, as the Royals walked off with both the boys’ and girls’ team championships in last year’s district meet.
