Jewell football is back in business.
After an abbreviated season in 2016 and nothing at all in 2017, the Blue Jays have landed in the seven-team Special District 4, as part of the OSAA’s new six-man football division at the 1A level.
As of the second week of practice, Jewell head coach Joel Johnston had eight players on the roster, and the Jays have a slate of six games on the schedule.
After opening this year with three straight home games against Powers, McKenzie and Triangle Lake, Jewell will finish with three consecutive road games, at Eddyville Charter, Gilchrist and Triangle Lake.
In addition to Jewell, special district 4 teams include Alsea, Eddyville Charter, Gilchrist, McKenzie, Powers and Triangle Lake.
Jewell was 0-4 as a Class 1A independent team in 2016, when they played Alsea and junior varsity teams from Falls City, Perrydale and Oregon School for the Deaf.
Jewell did not field a team in 2015, after going 0-7 overall in 2014. The Blue Jays were 3-2 as a member of the Casco League in 2013.
THE BLUE JAYS
Jewell’s roster of eight players includes juniors Ryan Kane and Joshua Ruch, and sophomores Edward Berg and Aiden Bixel.
The remainder of the roster is made up of freshmen: Cyrus Blodgett, Reid Duncan, Jackson Gnuschke and Bradley Rogers, who will be a team captain along with Kane.
