SEASIDE — The high school wrestling powers of Northwest Oregon met at Seaside Friday and Saturday, in the annual Pacific Rim Armed Forces Tournament.

Competing in their last Pac Rim as a member of the Cowapa League, Scappoose powered its way to the team championship, ahead of a few other big wrestling powers, Tigard and Estacada.

Meanwhile, wrestlers from the Lower Columbia region had their share of success individually — just not as much in the team standings.

After a second place showing in last year’s meet, Ilwaco slipped to sixth, while Knappa, Seaside, Warrenton and Astoria all finished in the bottom six of the team standings. Fifteen schools took part in the annual tournament.

Knappa had one championship qualifier, as junior Luke Goozee reached the finals at 132 pounds.

Goozee scored three straight pins, including a 43-second fall over Matthew LaVoie of St. Helens in the semifinals.

In the title match, Goozee faced Emilio Jimenez of Class 6A Tigard. Jimenez built an early lead, only to have Goozee battle back and tie the match, 10-10 in the final minute.

A late escape gave Jimenez the one point he needed for an 11-10 victory.

Ilwaco’s Ghannon Whelden took second at 126 pounds, and teammate Marcello Lazaro was second at 285.

Keegan Kemmer of Ilwaco lost a first round match to Knappa’s Robert Pina, but wrestled back to place third at 120 pounds; and teammate Royce Murry was third at 152.

The highlight for the home team was a third place finish for Seaside’s Luke Nelson, who went 5-1 and scored an 8-1 decision over Yamhill-Carlton’s Zackary Rodriguez in the consolation final.

After a first round bye, Astoria’s Trey Hagemen won a match to reach the semifinals at 160, where he lost a 12-4 decision to Estacada’s Justin Drury. Hageman bounced back and eventually placed fourth.
