AARP will hold two “Smart Driver” classes in May. The classes are all new and have new student guide books and videos. The instructors have all been retrained.

All of the classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a 45-minute break for lunch. Those attending should come early to get the paperwork done.

• May 16 John Benson will be the instructor at Tillamook Bay Community College, 4301 Third St. in Tillamook. To register, call the TBCC at 503-842-8222 or 888-306 8222.

• May 19 Don Hawley will teach at the Peace Lutheran Church, 565 12th St. in Astoria. Call 503-338-2408 to register.

These courses are designed for seniors age 50 and older, but anyone can attend. For most, Oregon state law provides a discount on auto insurance premiums for completing this course. Attendance at the entire class is required to receive your certificate of completion.

For those who have already taken this or a similar course, most insurance companies require that a refresher course be taken every three years to continue to receive the discount; or every two years for those who are 70 or older.

Preregistration is required and seating is limited. The cost for these classes is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Tuition is payable at the start of class.

To request that a class be given at a specific church or organization, or for questions or information, call Don Hawley at 503-861-1813.
