Quilters and fabric artists of all skill levels (and personalities) are invited to enter Custom Threads' Crab and Seafood Quilt Challenge. The contest is intended to encourage "unique to Astoria" designs that support local industries.

Entries may be small, wall hangings or table runners, minimum 14 by 30 inches and maximum 26 by 48 inches. Any techniques may be used and embellishment is fine, but every entry must include at least one crab in the top. Entries must have three layers: top, batting and backing, and must be stitched together and ready to hang.

Categories and sponsors are:

• Saltiest (most representative of the fishing industry), sponsored by Erickson Floral Co.

• Fishiest or Crabbiest (best fish or crab design), sponsored by Fish Landing

• Artsiest (most artistic), sponsored by ABECO

• Most Delicious (looks good enough to eat), sponsored by Silver Salmon Grille

• Funniest (a crab comment on life?), sponsored by Columbia Memorial Women's Center

There is no fee to enter, but an entry form is required and packets with a square of fabric and contest rules are available for $1 at Custom Threads, 1282 Commercial St. Quilts are due March 1 and will go on display at Custom Threads. For information, call 325-7780.
