PORTLAND - The Astoria Regatta Association helped light up the streets of Portland in the annual Starlight Parade June 5 and came home with a second-place trophy.

With nearly 50 float entrants and 18 high school marching bands enduring a rainy downtown course, the Portland General Electric/SOLV Starlight Parade presented by Southwest Airlines kicked off the Portland Rose Festival.

The Regatta Association's float, which featured an old Columbia River bowpicker that the Association had painted and decorated, edged out the Rhododendron Festival Association for second place in the Festival Division. The Puyallup Community Float took first prize. The Queen's Award for the community float with the best illumination went to the Marysville Strawberry Festival, and the Olympia Capital Lakefair won the Sweepstakes Award for the best community float overall.

Manning the Regatta Association's float were several of the young Regatta Ambassadors. Association member Colin Moore reported that despite the rain, the parade was a lot of fun. "We still had a blast," he said.
