Lucy's Books, 348 12th St., hosts Portland author Scott Nadelson reading from his new short story collection at 7 p.m.Thursday, Sept. 9.

"Saving Stanley: The Brickman Stories" is rich with the complicated moments of ordinary suburban lives and the angst that lies under their surface. These interconnected stories focus on the different members of the Brickman family as they navigate their Jewishness, their hopes and losses and their relationships with each other. According to fellow writer Marjorie Sandor, author of "Portrait of My Mother, who Posed Nude in Wartime," Nadelson's debut collection "achieves a rare balance between compassionate comedy and an unswerving attention to the dark trials of family life."
