SEASIDE - A Whale of a Tale bookstore welcomes some heavy hitters in the world of literature over the next two weekends.

Award-winning romance novelist Susan Wiggs will sign copies of her newest book, "The Ocean Between Us," from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 17. Readers can also meet the author at a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Ocean Lodge, 2864 Pacific St. in Cannon Beach.

Wiggs originally became a math teacher, but said she turned to writing romance novels when she ran out of books she wanted to read. She has been writing professionally since 1987 and is a frequent workshop leader and speaker at writers' conferences.

"This is a wonderful book for all women," said A Whale of a Tale owner Trudy Doolittle, "but especially those who have loved ones overseas fighting for our country, or even those whose spouses travel extensively."

Celebrated author Ursula K. Le Guin visits A Whale of a Tale from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24, to sign copies of her latest novel, "Searoad." In the book, Le Guin explores Klatsand, Oregon, a beach town where ordinary people bring their dreams and sorrows for a weekend or the rest of their lives, and sometimes learn to read what the sea writes on the sand.

Le Guin, who has lived in Portland since 1958, writes poetry and prose in various modes including realistic fiction, science fiction, fantasy, young children's books, books for young adults, screenplays and essays. Her best known fantasy works, the first four Books of Earthsea, have sold millions of copies in America and England, and have been translated into sixteen languages. Several of her major titles have remained continuously in print for more than 30 years, and three of her books have been finalists for the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
