SEASIDE - Nine barbershop quartets will sing at the Seaside Convention Center Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14 and 15.

"These are the best quartets in the Northwest," said Doug Barker, one of the organizers. All nine quartets have won the Evergreen District Championships. The district covers Alaska, British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

The event is unique because it is not a competition, Barker said. "They're just having a show, so they get to have fun," he said. Each group will sing Friday in a smaller lounge show setting. The Seaside High School Jazz Choir will be performing as well. Saturday, the groups will sing again, but they will also sing as one chorus, Barker said. "You get about 50 trained voices," he said. "It's quite impressive."

Friendly Advice, one of the quartets, will perform at schools, retirement homes and the Seaside Providence Hospital Thursday and Friday.

Barker said the quartets sing contemporary music and have a lot of fun. "They really know how to have fun," he said. "It's very entertaining. It's very funny."

The 21st Annual Barbershop Cabaret is $15 for the 7 p.m. show Friday and $17-20 for Saturday's show, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time at the Seaside Chamber of Commerce on 7 N. Roosevelt Drive or by calling (503) 738-6391.
