Speaking of mysteries: The Ear received several e-mails and phone calls asking why the SHIPS in the river DIDN’T SOUND THEIR HORNS at the stroke of midnight New Year’s Eve like they usually do. Why not, indeed?

The first call was to the port offices. Nope. Nobody knew why there were no horns sounded. The second call was to the bar pilots office. Nope again. Finally, the Ear e-mailed BRUCE CONNOR to see if he knew the answer. He and his wife, SUZIE, replied:

“Sorry to say, the captain we talked with did not think to blow his horn. Had one ship sounded off, we are sure this would have created a domino effect. Others would follow. Next year we are all over it.” Can’t wait for next year!
