During Clatsop Community College’s annual Mental Math Challenge, held May 10, students were asked math questions and had 30 seconds to work out each problem in their heads and write their answers on a piece of paper.

This year, 115 third- through eighth- grade students from Astoria and Broadway middle schools, Cannon Beach, Gearhart, Hilda Lahti, Long Beach (Wash.), Ocean Park (Wash.) and Seaside Heights elementary schools, Jewell School and Warrenton Grade School participated. The top three finishers in each grade received prizes.

The winners in each grade are as follows:

Third grade: first place, Josey Cobb, second place, Sam Irwin, both of Warrenton Grade School; and third place, Madilynn Eichler, Long Beach Elementary School.

Fourth grade: first place, Tristan Trudell; second place Alex Carper; and third place, Jacob Nation. They all attend Long Beach Elementary School.

Fifth grade: first place, Caitlin Derrey, third place, Nallely Valenzuela, both of Long Beach Elementary School; and second place, Henry Samuelson, Jewell School

Sixth grade: first place, Jay Kelly, second place, Trent Ramsey, both of Long Beach Elementary School; and third place, Isaac Gray, Astoria Middle School.

Seventh grade: first place, Jonathan Williams, second place Ole Englund, both of Astoria Middle School; and third place, Nathan Rushcheinsky, Warrenton Grade School.

Eighth grade/non-algebra: first place, Erick Moss, Warrenton Grade School; second place, Jaxson Smith, Jewell School; and third place, Nathan Ortega-Gifford, Hilda Lahti Elementary School.

Eighth grade/algebra: first place Enoch Gray, second place, Elijah Hirsch, both of Astoria Middle School; and third place, Ashley Fish, Warrenton Grade School.

Estimation contest winners: Jay Kelly, Henry Samuelson, Tyler Green.

The students enjoyed refreshments provided by 3 Cups Coffee House. The 2012 Mental Math Challenge was sponsored by Wauna Federal Credit Union.
