How low can we go?When residents of Clatsop or Pacific counties go on vacation, they often indulge in energetic pursuits. We are true to the Northwest spirit of loving the outdoors and, as a rule, don't hesitate to pull on hiking boots, waders, skis or any other accoutrement of an active lifestyle.

Such activities can leave us breathless, however, and not only because of the physical exertion involved. As we live at or very near to sea level, any rise in altitude means less oxygen. Is there anywhere we can go in Oregon that is lower than Astoria? No. Astoria, officially at 6 feet above sea level, is as low as you can go in Oregon according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Even driving south to Seaside requires a 4 foot gain in altitude, as they sit at 10 feet above sea level.

If you really want to get breathless, check out the following top 10 Oregon cities in the altitude rankings:

La Grande 2,755 feet

Union 2,765 feet

Prineville 2,840 feet

Baker City 3,368 feet

Bend 3,599 feet

Enterprise 3,790 feet

Sexton Summit 3,836 feet

Klamath Falls 4,098 feet

Burns 4,141 feet

Lakeview 4,774 feet
