On July 11 and 12, three local dentists participated in the Oregon Mission of Mercy (MOM) event in Salem. Dr. Gary Pedersen, Dr. Dave Carneiro and Dr. Jeremy Shakespear volunteered with 995 other dental providers to offer dental care to at no cost to patients in need.

The MOM project is hosted by the Oregon Dental Association. MOM services are typically housed in a large arena where portable dental stations are set up and attended by volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, lab techs and other volunteers.

July’s event provided services to 1,255 patients. A total of 6,533 procedures were performed with donated care valued at $738,299. July’s event was the fifth MOM in Oregon.

Other venues included Portland and Medford. In addition to being the only three dentists from Clatsop County volunteering at July’s MOM event, these three have something else in common. Each has provided services at the same address in Astoria. Pedersen moved his dental practice to 1775 Exchange Street in 1979. Carneiro bought that practice in 2002 and Shakespear is the current owner of the practice. The three said they were happy to come together to provide services to patients in need.
