The Disabled American Veterans’ van is currently short of drivers, and cannot provide uninterrupted service to veterans. Volunteers are needed one or two days a month to drive the van, which departs from the parking lot on Marine Drive just west of Burger King at 7 a.m. to deliver veterans to their appointments at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Portland. The van returns to Astoria in the afternoon.

Local veterans depend on this transportation for medical treatment they otherwise would not receive. Many are being treated for life-threatening conditions, and have no other way to see their physicians.

Volunteer drivers get a free physical examination and breakfast and lunch in the veterans’ cafeteria on the days they drive. For information, call Dick Lang at 503-298-8757 or email
