CLATSKANIE — The Great Vow Zen Monastery, located at 79640 Quincy-Mayger Road in Clatskanie, is holding a “Transforming the Inner Critic” retreat from 5 p.m. Jan. 30 to 1 p.m. Feb. 1.         

During this workshop Buddhist and psychological teachings are used to see this voice more clearly. There are guided meditations, group discussions and interactive exercises. Attendees learn tools to help transform the relationship to the Inner Critic, bringing it back into balance without losing its discriminating wisdom.

The cost is $150 ($120 for Zen Community of Oregon; a $75 reduced rate available to those in need) plus donation.

The St. Mary, Star of the Sea parish will have two special events in support of the Philippine people, whose country suffered the loss of over 7,300 people due to severe flooding caused by typhoons and tropical storms. A Mass for healing is being held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by rosary and benediction at 3 p.m. Pope Francis is in pilgrimage to the Philippines from Jan. 15-19 to offer his support and comfort.

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring the first Monthly Parish Family Movie Night at 6 p.m. Monday in St. Mary, Star of the Sea Auditorium, 1411 Grand Ave. The movie is “The Lion King.” Movie Night was postponed a week due to the Jan. 12 National Championship football game between the University of Oregon and Ohio State.

The Pacific Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is holding a service at 11 a.m. Sunday at the First Congregational Church, 820 Alameda Ave. The Rev. Kit Ketcham is delivering a sermon, “Deeds, Not Creeds.”
