The USS Astoria sunk Aug. 9, 1942, at the Battle of Savo Island, 72 years ago.

In 1992 the Astoria City Council proclaimed that day be observed every year as Clatsop Post 12 USS Astoria Day.

Saturday, USS Astoria Day will be celebrated at Clatsop Post 12.

Starting at 11 a.m. hamburgers for $5 and hot dogs for $2 will be served.

A program starts after the Regatta Parade and includes the presentation of a portrait to USS Astoria survivor Don Yeamans.

A karaoke jam session and dance music follows. The event is open to the public.
