ILWACO, Wash. - Come celebrate the cranberry in all its rich, red glory Friday, Oct.10 through Sunday, Oct. 12 during the annual Cranberrian Fair in Ilwaco at the Ilwaco Heritage Museum.

"Cranberries are our most prominent local color item," said Ilwaco Heritage Museum Director Hobe Kytr.

This fair is based on the harvest festivals that took place in the 1920s. The festivals undoubtedly faded out during the Depression; nor were they held during World War II. "Noreen Robinson revived the fair in 1983 when the Ilwaco Heritage Museum was founded," said Kytr. Robinson is the museum's research librarian.

Don't worry about transportation between various fair sites. Park your own vehicle and take advantage of the trolley. Sponsored by the Peninsula cranberry growers, an hourly "Cranberry Trolley" will travel between the Ilwaco Heritage Museum, 115 S.E. Lake in Ilwaco, the Cranberry Museum, 2907 Pioneer Road, Long Beach, the World Kite Museum, Third Street in Long Beach and the Port of Ilwaco. Those wearing a Cranberrian Fair button ride the trolley free.

Cranberries and cranberry food items will be plentiful. Try a piece of cranberry pie. The pie and other cranberry food specialties are available throughout the fair.

In addition to mouthwatering food, there will be quilters, weavers, basketry, traditional rug hookers and crafts. This may be a good time to do some early holiday shopping. Maybe a basket of woven cranberry vines will capture the eye. The baskets are made by local artist Janet Herring.

Entertainment on Saturday includes traditional music and old time fiddlers. Local favorites the Brownsmead Flats and the Blue Heron String Band will regale fair-goers with traditional music, as will musicians from Portland and Seattle.

The purchase of a Cranberrian Fair button for $3 is your admission to the fair and includes the Cranberry Trolley and admission to the Ilwaco Heritage Museum and World Kite Museum. Buttons are for sale at most local merchants or at any of the museums.

Hours for the fair are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.

The Cranberrian Fair is sponsored by the Ilwaco Heritage Museum in cooperation with the Cranberry Museum and the World Kite Museum.
