The Molehill Orkestrah, an independently managed group of musical storytellers, performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at the Liberty Theater, 1203 Commercial St.
Eight members comprise the Orkestrah, an unlikely mix of mandolin, baritone tuba, cello, violin, soprano saxophone, electric upright bass, percussion and guitar. Members of the Orkestrah possess a variety of musical backgrounds ranging from classical to punk rock, from mariachi to jazz. The music weaves in and out of rhythmic and melodic threads from all over the world including Middle Eastern, Slavic, Klezmner, Mediterranean, American folk and Desert Gypsy styles.
The Orkestrah grew from the Dia De Los Muertos celebrations in downtown Tuscon, Ariz., four years ago. Molehill remains an integral part of the event and continues to collaborate with a variety of artists, musicians and performance troupes. The Molehill Orkestrah has released two albums including "Live From Underground" (limited edition) and "To Anima Mundi."
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at Lucy's Books, 348 12th St. in Astoria, (503) 325-4210. No host beer and wine will be available.
