The Friday Musical Club began in 1907 and is one of the oldest clubs in Astoria. The group began as a bimonthly gathering of women musicians who wanted to improve their musical skills by performing for one another. They gathered in each other's homes for performances and social activities. In the 1920s and 30s, the Flavel sisters, Nellie and Kate, were active members of the club. Nellie played the piano and Kate sang. The Friday Musical Club supported music in the community by organizing public concerts, which were the forerunners of the Community Concerts Organization in Astoria. Other traditional activities included contributing music reference books to the Astoria Library.

The Friday Musical Club currently meets the first Friday of the month in members' homes in Astoria. "We welcome new members, other women musicians who enjoy performing and sharing their musical talents," said club president Dorothy Mason. "This Friday's open meeting and concert will be particularly meaningful." The public is invited to attend. For more information, call Mason at (503) 325-7332.
