The seventh annual Assistance League the Columbia Pacific Golf Ball Drop, held May 10 at the Astoria Golf & Country Club, was a huge success. The Columbia River Bar Pilots’ helicopter was out of commission, but the event was saved by Gary Turel and Seaside Helicopters.

During the event, 26 young golfers were taught basic golfing skills by Astoria Golf Pro John Kawasoe, followed by a hamburger and hot dog barbecue and bake sale.

ALCP raised more than $10,000, which will be used to dress Clatsop County schoolchildren next year. ALCP provides clothing for schoolchildren in need, at a cost of approximately $100 per child. In the school year 2013-2014, ALCP provided clothing for 594 children.

For this event, 2,000 marked golf balls were sold for $5 each and dropped from the helicopter onto a marked green. Prizes donated from local businesses were given to the balls in or closest to the hole.
