SKAMOKAWA, Wash. - Columbia River Kayaking offers a fun way to beat the heat and get close to nature with kayaking classes and tours this Fourth of July weekend.

• Quickstart Introduction to Kayaking, noon to 4 p.m. Friday, July 2 -- Covers preparation, gear, launching, basic boat control, stability and potential hazards. Held at the Lewis and Clark River location. Cost is $70 and registration is required.

• Lewis and Clark River by Full Moon, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, July 2 - Cost is $75 and registration is required.

• Balance and Efficiency Intermediate Kayak Lesson, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 4 - Class teaches the pinnacle of flat water style and the basis for rough water adventure. Held at Nehalem Bay. Cost is $115, and experience and registration are required.

• Fireworks Tour on Nehalem Bay, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4 - Cost is $75. Registration and sobriety are required.

• Splashfest, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 5 - For any paddler looking to prepare for the inevitable, Splashfest provides instruction and practice in capsize, re-entry and assists in calm water. Held in Astoria. Cost is $70 and registration is required.
