CANNON BEACH - The Cannon Beach History Center hosts a free, public lecture by Robert Johnson on the life of a Columbia River Bar Pilot at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9.

Capt. Johnson was born and raised in Eugene and was appointed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he graduated in 1971. His sailing career spanned 15 years, during which he sailed on many types of ships trading throughout the world. He sailed as master for four years and spent about 18 months as time charter operations manager for a major grain house in New York.

Johnson became a Columbia River Bar Pilot in 1987, where in addition to his piloting duties, he has held numerous positions in the Bar Pilots Association. He lives in Astoria with his two daughters.
