Two historic Clatsop County homes will hold open houses in September.

Open house for the Gustavus Holmes House, 682 34th St. in Astoria is from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 12. The West-Bouvy House, 1981 Pacific Ave., Cannon Beach will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30.

Both houses are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Owners of the houses receive property tax relief under the state's special assessment program, which freezes a property's assessed value for 15 years for local property tax purposes. Owners of commercial properties may reapply for an additional 15 years.

In return for the special assessment benefit, a property owner must hold an annual open house for the public at least one day per year, for a minimum of four consecutive hours between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Except for state observed national holidays, owners may choose any day of the year.

The monthly open house list is distributed through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and certain participating chambers of commerce, historical societies, assessor's offices and local landmarks offices. It is on the Internet along with other information about the program at :

Oregon's SHPO was established in 1967 within the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to manage and administer programs for the protection of the state's significant historic and prehistoric resources.
