In One Ear: Whatever floats your moat

In One Ear: Whatever floats your moat

Fukishima has become a dirty word, and the land-locked nuclear power plant is still leaking radioactive water after being roughed up in the 2011 Japanese tsunami. The West Coast waits and wonders if three-eyed glowing fish are heading this way.

But would the leak have happened if Fukishima weren’t on terra not-so firma? Discovery.com (http://tinyurl.com/atomfloat) ran a story last month about some MIT researchers who don’t think so, and have come with a clever idea: floating nuclear power plants (one is pictured) moored to the sea floor and placed five to seven miles out at sea, where “even the most massive tidal waves are dispersed by the ocean depths.”

Godzilla will not be pleased.
