Will a North Coaster take the title next? The “WORLD’S OLDEST LIVING PERSON” (according to Guinness World Records), Jiroemon Kimura, who was born in 1897, died of natural causes June 12 in Japan at age 116 (http:// tinyurl.com/oldest116). The secret to his longevity? He didn’t smoke, farmed until he was 90, and his motto was “to eat light and live long.”

JERRY USTBY called the Ear to make sure a landmark date did not go unobserved: July 1 was the 50th birthday of the implementation of the ZIP Code by the U.S. Post Office. (Bet you didn’t know it stands for Zone Improvement Plan).

Courtesy of CNET.com (http://tinyurl.com/ZIPis50), you can watch a 15-minute cringe-inducing film clip from 1963, performed by The Swingin’ Six, put out by the USPS to convince the American public to start using ZIP codes. The Ear bets the group’s children and grandchildren disavow all knowledge of this video.
