BEAVERTON - Local poets, Florence Sage and Margit Bowler, will read from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Barnes and Noble at the Tanasbourne Mall, 18300 N.W. Evergreen Parkway, in Beaverton.

Sage will be the featured poet and Bowler will be the host for the event sponsored by the Oregon State Poetry Association.

Other invited readers include Donna Wright and Claudia Harper of Astoria, Christy Matlock-Phillips of Svensen and Cindy Gutierrez-Williams of Portland.

The program will include an Open Mike session where members of the audience may read a poem. The goal of the poetry reading is to include a diverse selection of voices, including children, and to offer an event that is family friendly. A book fair will be held at the store all day long with a percentage of proceeds to benefit the Oregon State Poetry Association's children's programs, including the annual student poetry contest.

Sage is founding co-host of Monday Mike for spoken word at the River Theater, main producer of the annual Fisher Poets Gathering, founding poetry editor for Hipfish arts & culture monthly, co-producer of "Read at the River" poetry CD, and Social Sciences teacher at Clatsop Community College in Astoria.

Bowler is a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Astoria Middle School. She is the only student to have won awards in three annual Oregon Student Poetry Contests. She is the author of "The Christmas Eve Ball," published in 2001. Bowler's current academic interest is astrophysics.
