Clatsop Community College’s annual Mental Math Contest Thursday challenged about 90 third- through eighth-graders from local elementary and middle schools.

During the contest, students are asked math questions and have 30 seconds to work out each problem in their heads and write their answers on a piece of paper.

Students came from Astoria Middle School, Broadway Middle School, Gearhart Elementary, Hilda Lahti Elementary, Ilwaco Middle School, Long Beach Elementary, Seaside Heights Elementary and Warrenton Grade School.

The top three finishers in each grade received prizes. Students also enjoyed snacks provided by 3 Cups Coffee House. The 2014 Mental Math Contest was sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by Wauna Federal Credit Union.

In the third grade:

• Poppy Hildebrandt of Long Beach placed first.

• Eva Bailey of Seaside placed second.

• Luca Bellissimo of Long Beach placed third.

In the fourth grade:

• Elizabeth Fulton of Knappa placed first.

• Christopher Lake of Long Beach placed second.

• Katie Krusick of Knappa placed third.

In the fifth grade:

• Shae Wood of Gearhart placed first.

• Samuel Irwin of Warrenton placed second.

• Gavin Adams of Knappa placed third.

In the sixth grade:

• Tristan Trudell of Long Beach placed first.

• Sam Gray of Astoria placed second.

• Emma Meyer of Seaside placed third.

In the seventh grade:

• Logan Gardner of Astoria placed first.

• Josiah Hirsch of Astoria placed second.

• Henry Samuelson of Astoria placed third.

In the eighth grade,


• Devin Cavness of Ilwaco placed first.

• Dylan Meyer of Seaside placed second.

• Ryan Fowler of Warrenton placed third.

In eighth grade algebra:

• Isaac Gray of Astoria placed first.

• Jay Kelly of Ilwaco placed second.

• Logan Gandy of Seaside placed third.
